Gough island is situated at 40 o 21' S 09 o 53' W in the South Atlantic Ocean.
It forms part of the Tristan da Cunha island group. It is 2348 km south-west
of
Cape Town. The island is about 14 km long and 7 km wide, and rises to a height
of 910 meters above sea level. It is volcanic in origin, with the largest part
of the island having been formed over 1 million years ago. The topography of
the island is very mountainous, with a very inaccessible shoreline. The only
human inhabitants of the island are a metereological team stationed at the
weather base on the south-eastern side of the island. The island falls under
British rule, but the weather station is under the control of the
South-African
Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.
